Machine-Tool Membrane Switch RFQs Before AMB 2026

Before requesting a membrane-switch quote for a machine tool, classify every visible control and indicator, then link it to the artwork, circuit contact, machine state and evidence owner. Keep emergency-stop and other safety-function decisions within the machine builder's risk assessment and safety architecture; do not ask a membrane keypad quotation to establish them. Use the mounted sample to confirm the agreed component interface, not to certify the complete machine.

AMB is scheduled for 15–19 September 2026 at Messe Stuttgart. Its official exhibition areas include machine tools, measuring and quality assurance, software, automation, control and drive systems, and electric or electronic equipment for machine tools. That makes the event a useful point for supplier conversations, but the event listing does not specify a membrane switch or approve any operator-panel design.

Before those conversations, turn the visible panel into a controlled interface package. A START legend, status lamp, service key and emergency-stop device may appear close together on the enclosure, yet they do not have the same electrical path, system responsibility or evidence. A useful RFQ preserves those differences instead of asking a component price to resolve them later.

Use the event as a review point, not as a design claim

The official AMB page confirms the dates, venue and broad exhibition areas. It does not establish that HYR will attend, exhibit or meet a particular buyer. Treat the show as a calendar prompt: decide what evidence you need before comparing operator-panel suppliers and what questions must return to the machine team.

Bring one current drawing revision rather than several partially aligned files. Mark the panel outline, active key zones, display and indicator windows, adhesive land, tail exit, connector, housing support and installed orientation. If the design is still open, label alternatives and identify the decision owner so quotations do not silently price different constructions.

A useful supplier discussion ends with a written assumption register. It should show which inputs were confirmed, which were proposed by the supplier, which remain unresolved and which changes would require a new price or sample. Event notes and business cards are not a released technical record.

Freeze the membrane-switch supply boundary

State what the requested part includes. A membrane-switch assembly may include a printed overlay, embossed or flat key areas, spacer layers, domes or printed contacts, indicator apertures or components, adhesive, a flexible circuit tail and a connector-ready termination. The quotation should identify the proposed construction and any customer-supplied item rather than treating the front artwork as the whole product.

Then define the mating interfaces. Record the enclosure opening and support beneath each active area, the surface receiving the adhesive, the available stack envelope, the display relationship, the tail path and the exact mating connector reference. Show separate external devices on the enclosure drawing when their location affects key spacing, legends, cable routing or operator access.

Keep controller behavior outside the component assumption. The membrane-switch supplier can map a named key to a contact and report the agreed physical or electrical observation. The machine builder decides whether that contact is accepted in setup, manual, automatic, maintenance or fault states and what feedback follows.

Classify each visible control before artwork approval

Start with an identifier table, not with color. For each key or indicator, record the visible legend, physical position, contact or pin reference, intended operator, available machine states, confirmation signal and record owner. Use the same identifier in the artwork, circuit drawing, controller input list and sample report so a later revision cannot change one layer invisibly.

Separate routine navigation, production commands, setup or jog requests, reset or acknowledgement, service access and status indication. The exact classes depend on the machine and risk assessment; this guide does not prescribe which function belongs in which class. Its purpose is to expose different responsibilities before they are compressed into one keypad graphic.

Color and shape can support recognition, but they do not establish command logic or safety status. The system specification must define permitted states, interlocks, confirmation, fault response and recovery. The panel drawing controls only the physical and electrical interface assigned to it.

Keep machinery-safety decisions with the machine design

ISO 12100:2010 provides a general risk-assessment and risk-reduction methodology for machinery and remains the published edition while a replacement is under development. ISO 16090-1:2022 addresses specified groups of machining centres, milling machines and transfer machines across their life cycle. The responsible machine team must decide whether and how those or other standards apply to the actual equipment; a component supplier should not infer applicability from a front-panel photograph.

IEC 60204-1:2016+A1:2021 applies to electrical, electronic and programmable electronic equipment and systems of machines within its scope. ISO 13850:2015 addresses principles for the emergency-stop function. Their public overviews reinforce an important procurement boundary: the presence of a red legend or a switch contact does not establish the required emergency-stop function, electrical architecture or validation evidence.

If the risk assessment requires a separate safety-related device, show its physical location and interface on the enclosure package while excluding its safety performance from the membrane-switch quote. The keypad supplier may need that geometry to avoid visual competition, adhesive conflicts or routing interference, but that coordination does not transfer safety responsibility.

Approve the interface on a mounted sample

A loose component can confirm artwork, outline, contact mapping and selected construction details. It cannot prove the relationship to the actual display, enclosure support, external controls, connector access or operator position. Mount the identified sample revision on the intended housing or a representative fixture before release.

Check visible legend and indicator alignment, key access with the intended gloves, separation from adjacent controls, physical response, circuit mapping, connector mating, tail clearance, adhesive contact and the agreed component-level electrical observations. Record the enclosure, controller or test fixture, drawing revision, specimen, method and result.

Keep machine-level observations in the system record. Permitted-state logic, safeguards, interlocks, emergency stopping, complete-machine electrical behavior and conformity need their own plans and responsible evidence. A mounted keypad that operates as specified is one accepted interface, not a certificate for the machine around it.

Release one comparable RFQ package

Send each candidate supplier the same controlled package: operator-panel drawing, artwork, key and indicator map, circuit or pinout, tail and connector definition, enclosure interface, proposed construction constraints, use environment, quantity basis and sample-acceptance scope. Put unresolved items in a visible register and require each quotation to identify assumptions, exclusions and alternatives.

Compare more than price. Check whether the proposed supply boundary is the same, whether tooling and samples cover the same features, whether customer-supplied parts are identified and whether the expected inspection record matches the approved characteristics. An attractive quote can still be incomparable if one supplier includes a connector, indicator assembly or mounted sample and another does not.
