Dead-front legends and transparent windows are optical artwork choices, not separate light sources. Record each lit zone, off-state appearance and acceptance method in the approved drawing.

Method choice

Which backlighting method is best for a membrane switch?

There is no universal best method. Start with point LEDs for independently controlled indicators, LED plus light-guide film for distributing side-coupled light across several legends or zones, and an EL panel only when a broad thin luminous area justifies its separate drive system. The final choice follows the visual task, enclosure, off-state appearance, power and control boundary, and duty cycle.

Power boundary

Can backlighting be selected before the driver and connector are defined?

No. Define the equipment supply, current-control or inverter responsibility, switching and dimming behaviour, independent zones, tail and connector pinout, driver location, and the project noise, thermal and safety boundary. Exact electrical values remain tied to the selected components and the controlled drawing.

Approval evidence

What should the first illuminated sample prove?

Approve the powered and unpowered artwork, uniformity, hotspots, edge leakage, colour and brightness under the expected ambient and viewing conditions. Also confirm switching or dimming, key feel, stack fit, connector interface and the mounted enclosure. Record the accepted sample, construction revision and pass/fail method in the controlled drawing.
